For 79 years, the magazine has assigned two topics t each monthly issue and asked their devoted readers send in their best original dishes to fit each category. Normally a magazine filled with "reader recipes" would make me worry they wouldn't be as good as recipes from a professional, editorial staff, but nothing could be further from the truth. The first section has favorite recipes decade by decade, and they've managed to pick recipes and photograph them in a way that still appeals to the modern palate. There are other sections for 10 Best Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, as well as party foods, breads, slow foods, and two categories of desserts. If the magazine as a whole has a weakness, it's the Global Recipes section (never really a strong suit of BH&G).I've tried party foods (Layered Greek Dip, Ultimate Triple-Onion Tart), dinner (Green Chile Fried Chicken), sides (Summer Vegetable balsamic Potato Salad), and desserts (Choclava, Hazelnut Truffles) and everything has been delicious. I would trust recipes from this magazine the way I'd usually only trust America's Test Kitchen.
I'm not sure whether the print run has sold out, but if you can find a copy of this, get it! If they issue a 2013 Best-Loved Reader Recipes I'll be comparing the table of contents... I've been suckered into buying "back by popular demand" printings of magazines I already own, but in this case I'd like to buy three or four more of this magazine to give to family and friends.
